Join us for an online conversation: Permaculture & Palestine

As people who care deeply about Earth Care, People Care, and Fair Share, we invite you to come together in a space of reflection, learning, and solidarity.

A growing number of voices within the permaculture movement are recognising that what is happening in Palestine is not just a regional issue but a global one. We are witnessing a genocide in real time, with devastating consequences for human lives, ecosystems, and the possibility of peace. The impact is felt far beyond the Occupied Territories, fueling extremism, ecological destruction, and global instability.

Permaculture is not primarily a protest movement—it is a “solutionary” one. But solutions cannot emerge in isolation. If we are serious about regeneration, systems thinking, and the ethics at the heart of our practice, then we cannot look away. The destruction of lives and landscapes in Palestine—through mass displacement, militarised violence, and ecological collapse—demands our attention and response.

This conversation is an invitation to come together, not just to grieve, but to imagine how best to:

Understand how what’s happening in Palestine connects to our ethics and practice.

Listen to voices on the ground and in solidarity movements.

Explore how our skills, networks, and communities can respond with care, clarity, and courage.

Propose actions or support rooted in justice, regeneration, and international solidarity.

Many in the permaculture world are discussing this in private, but public dialogue has been limited.

It’s time to begin the work of collective understanding and response.

The proposal is for two calls so that people in all time zones can participate at least once:

A couple of suggested topic discussions:

* A permaculture perspective looks at elements in an ecosystem and tries to create harmony and beneficial relationships between them. How can we utilise permaculture’s ecologically-rooted, land-based, living systems perspective to work towards a peaceful future – between human societies, and between humans and the land they inhabit?

* In what areas can we be of practical help, in particular for the WASH sector, either now in the West Bank or whenever it’s possible to enter Gaza in the future?

Ground Rules

Let’s have a few ground rules to have an effective call:

* We embrace complexity and can differentiate between Judaism and Zionism, and between Islam and Islamic extremism. We condemn all violent religious extremism.

* We condemn anti-Semitism and the centuries of pogroms and violence leading to the Nazi genocide. We affirm our commitment to “Never Again”…and this means never again for anyone.

* We condemn the Zionist campaign of violence and ethnic cleansing used to create the state of Israel, both before, during and after the Nakba (“the Catastrophe”, 1948), which expelled 750,000 Palestinians from their homes. We recognise that this colonial settler project has led to the ongoing genocide in Gaza and the Apartheid occupation of the West Bank.

* We do not use the word genocide lightly. There is a consensus among genocide scholars, every reputable international humanitarian organisation, the UN, and many other bodies that a genocide is indeed occurring.

* We recognise that for centuries, in many places and at many times throughout the Middle East (including Palestine), Muslims, Jews, and Christians lived together in relative harmony and tolerance…and this can happen again. In fact, it’s the only future to work towards if we want to live in peace. However, the genocide, Apartheid and illegal occupation must end first to allow for the possibility of peaceful co-existence.
